This is called scarfing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scarf reed with a sharp box cutter. Be sure to cut it away from your hand!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start slow and take off a little at a time &#8211; in thin shavings. It&#8217;s easy to cut too deep and slice off the end of the reed. Clamp the reed around the top edge of each side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see in the photo below how handy the plastic clamps are. As mentioned above, I suggest using plastic clamps like those listed above. Cut the piece an inch longer to allow for tension.
